Do You Need Help Coping With Grief?

If you are living but not fully alive due to a broken heart then you have found the right place. We can’t say “we know how you feel” because we don’t. In fact if you’re like most grievers you don’t even know how to describe how you feel so how could anyone else know?

Let’s say right now that what you are feeling is normal. There is no right and no wrong way to grieve.  Whether you are in pain because someone important to you has died, a relationship has ended or you have experienced any one of the over 40 significant losses in life that invoke grief we are here to help.

For the last 30+ years The Grief Recovery Institute founded by John James has used The Grief Recovery Method® to help hundred of thousands of grievers. His book The Grief Recovery Handbook has now sold almost one million copies globally and is available in 16 languages.

John had realised that time, far from being a great healer, merely passes. It is the actions we take during the time that determine our recovery.
Recovery is achieved by a taking a series of small, correct actions to complete the unrealised hopes, dreams and expectations caused by a death, divorce or other significant loss.

By the end of the course I was able to complete all the emotional ‘unfinished business’ – and now I feel at peace inside. It’s a wonderful feeling – it’s as though the sun has come out again."

So what is the Grief Recovery Method and can it really help me?

As the Grief Recovery Method is relatively new to the UK you may well never have heard of it before despite the million copy selling book. Therefore it might be easier to say first what Grief Recovery isn’t:

It isn’t therapy – although doing it is therapeutic what we do isn’t therapy – we don’t analyse anything or attempt to dig around to find out the “whys” we simply teach you the correct actions to take that will help your broken heart heal.

It isn’t counselling or bereavement counselling. While bereavement is the number one reason for people to contact us, grief is the normal and natural reaction to all loss, not just death. There are over 40 life events that invoke grief including relationship break up, redundancy & relocations and the Grief Recovery Method can help with all of them. Many people find counselling helpful, many others don’t. The Grief Recovery actions can safely be followed along side counselling or on it’s own. Where counselling is all about discovery – finding what the real issues are and acknowledging them. We are all about recovery – taking the steps to complete all the unfinished business left hanging after a loss.

It isn’t a “treatment” or cure. You aren’t ill, you’re grieving. You don’t need to be “fixed” you do need help to take the actions that will lead to recovery. John James discovered what these actions were by himself but it took him years to work it out. By following the Grief Recovery Method you won’t have to wait years to feel better. We can’t wave a wand and stop you feeling sad but thousands of people report that having taken the actions as directed the pain associated with the loss has eased considerably or ended. If you have fond memories that turn painful when brought to mind then Grief Recovery is for you.

So what is it, if it isn’t any of the above?

Probably the best description is that it’s an education. We will teach you, in a series of lessons, to recognise the myths and misinformation you learned along the way to cope with loss & to recognise the short term coping behaviours that seem to help for a while but then stop.

We will then teach you how to identify and complete the pain caused by the desire that things had been different, things we wish had been better or what you wanted more of.

It is our mission to help as many grievers as possible in the shortest possible time so we’ve tried to make The Grief Recovery Method available in the way that is most appropriate for you.

Personal Workshop Weekends

If you are the sort of person that likes to immerse themselves in what you’re doing then the Personal Workshop is for you. Workshops run for 3 full days- Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a short assignment on the Friday and Saturday night. While you are working on your own losses you will interact with the others in the group, learning from them and their experiences. It is very intense, very emotional but also astonishingly uplifting and hugely rewarding. This way of learning Grief Recovery is ideal if you’re too far from a Grief Recovery Specialist to make a weekly programme viable. For more information on Personal Workshops click the button below

Outreach Group Action Programmes

The best way to experience Grief Recovery is in a group and the Outreach Programme offers you the most effective way to attain the benefits of the Grief Recovery Method.

This programme is a series of weekly sessions facilitated by a Grief Recovery Specialist. Over 12 weeks you will be gently guided through the process, alongside other grievers but working at your own pace.

The price of the programme is set by the Specialist but generally this is the most cost effective way to work with a professional using the Method as the cost of the Specialist’s time is shared.

One – One

Ideal if you can’t commit to the available group schedule or you really can’t cope with a group environment, a One – One programme is exactly that. The Grief Recovery Specialist will guide you through the actions of the programme over 6 or 7 weekly sessions. The price is set by the Specialist, contact your nearest Specialist for details. Using the book

In order to reach as many grievers as possible John James wrote the Grief Recovery handbook specifically so that it’s not essential to work with a Grief Recovery Specialist to get the benefits of the Grief Recovery Method. Reading the book and then doing the actions in the book is incredibly effective and is how many Specialists first found Grief Recovery. Having the done the book they are so inspired by the results they go on to train to help others. You can either buy the book online or enquire at your local library. Unfortunately in the UK it can’t yet be found in bookshops.

Certification Training

If having recognised the need for practical effective help for grievers you feel that you might want to help others like you as well as help yourself then Grief Recovery Method Certification Training may be for you. Everyone who trains to help others is first taught, and experiences, the Method for themselves as the first part of the programme. The rest of the programme then to teaches you how to pass this knowledge onto others.

Whichever way you chose to follow the Method following the actions brings about change. We wish you all the best on your journey to recovery.
