Grief UK Launches 'Open Ears' for Schools
Posted on 7th July 2020 at 14:39
We are extremely excited to launch a year-long curriculum for schools, which has been created to give children the means to deal with losses of any kind and help their emotional development and wellbeing. The Open Ears Programme, designed to fit with the new PSHE guidelines due to come into place from September, is intended for whole-class teaching.
Children will also gain plenty of other skills too, such as self-awareness, taking responsibility, being a good friend, and learning how to listen.
Ready-to-use activities and lesson plans
The Open Ears Programme will provide teachers with ready-to-go lesson plans that can be used weekly, worksheets, assemblies, and circle times. The pack also includes stickers, posters, and certificates. The programme is available in three different age categories: 4-7, 8-12, and 13+. The Open Ears Programme uses some of the tools from our ACEs-informed training course Helping Children with Loss, which is for anyone who works or lives with children.
This year, we have all experienced loss, with many families bereaved, the loss of our routines, the loss of hopes and dreams, the loss of school for so many children, and the loss of our ‘normal.’ It felt like the right time to create this important programme.
Loss is a part of life
We all deal with loss at some point in our lives, whether that’s losing a parent, a grandparent, divorce, a pet, or a favourite pencil. Children also experience a sense of loss when they change classes and teachers, move to a new house, or fall out with their friends.
The Open Ears Programme will equip children with coping strategies and the right tools to deal with loss, which will be learned in a fun, yet informative way through a series of weekly activities spread out over the year.
The Open Ears programme is available to pre-order now at a discounted launch price of £96.00 including postage from our online shop - order now to take advantage of the special offer!
Other ways we can help
We are creating lots of resources that you can use before and after schools are fully open. These include posters, tips, articles, lesson plans, videos and more, which are being made available here.
If you have a specific need or want relating to the kind of resources you’d like to see, please email us on firstname.lastname@example.org.
2. When Children Grieve Book
We have a definitive guide to helping children really deal with loss from the authors of the Grief Recovery Handbook and founders of the Grief Recovery Institute. You can order as many copies as you need from our online shop.
3. Helping Children Deal with Loss Programme
This programme for adults will teach you how to communicate with the children in your care about losses they have experienced and those they yet might face. Led by a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist this programme uses When Children Grieve as the textbook as you work through the process step by step over four weekly sessions. More information can be found here.
