Heartbreak is Bereavement 

Is your heart broken? 
Have you experienced the end of a romantic partnership? 
Do you feel lonely, alone, or like you don't know what to do? 
After working with grievers for decades, one thing is certain: the end of a relationship means grief, even when there has been no death. 
Having your heart broken is excruciatingly painful. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of depression and suicide, and the pain can have a negative impact on future relationships
Because we have learnt that grief only occurs after a death, however, we often don't seek help for our loss - we may feel embarrassed to ask or we've been discouraged by unhelpful comments. 

People don't know what to say 

Even with the best intentions, most people do not know how to comfort us after heartbreak. You may have already heard some of the following: 
"Don't worry, there are plenty of other fish in the sea." 
"It could always be worse." 
"Don't you think it's time to move on?" 
"You should start going out more and meeting new people." 

Finally, a new way of looking at heartbreak 

Once you've realised that heartbreak means bereavement, you can start giving yourself the compassion and support that a bereavement deserves. Even though most people do not seek help for breakups, it is important for so many reasons. Here are just a few: 
Long-term symptoms of grief, including depression and physical illness 
Decreased concentration and an inability to focus at work, while driving, or while spending time with friends and family 
Negative impact on future relationships because you're still carrying emotional pain 
Difficulty finding new relationships ("I'll never date again")
